Disk Storage

Disk space, or storage, is the amount of storage space on the server's hard drive that you are allowed to use. It's similar the hard drive space you have on your computer and is measured in megabytes or gigabytes.

When you upload your website files such as: html pages, image files, document's, photo's, scripts, etc. to the server you use up your disk space allowance. The size of your files will determine how much space is used up. In most cases, the amount of space a file requires on the server is about the same as what it would be on your computer. Files for websites are usually much smaller than your usual Word document or music file.

How Much Disk Space?

  • A small to medium website will need between 10 and 100MB of disk space.

When you look at the size of a web page, you will see that they are usually very small (especially when well designed). In fact, they may be even smaller than 1K. But if you look at the size of the images, multimedia, flash, documents, pdf and other components used inside the pages, you will often find them to be many times larger than the page itself.

You should expect web pages to take between 5 and 50K of space on your server, this depending on the use of images, quality of the overall page design, documents and consuming components. Plan more disk space if you plan on using these elements.

If you plan on using email accounts, you must also account for this space as well.

You may start out on a smaller plan and upgrade.
